Step-by-step guide
Register and submit on bpssc.bihar.gov.in → Home Guard tab → Advt. No. 05/2026 between 01 May and 01 June 2026. Pay the Rs. 100/- fee online. Postal forms are not accepted.
100 MCQs / 100 marks / 2 hours / OMR mode. Class-10 standard. Conducted at centres notified by BPSSC. Multi-shift normalisation by Equi-Percentile Method. The written exam is qualifying; minimum 30% required to advance to PET.
Top 5× of category vacancies (per PDF §6(अ)(v)) by written-exam score are called for the Physical Efficiency Test. The 5× ratio may be reduced if enough qualifying candidates are not available.
Height, chest (males), and weight (females) measured against the cadre standard. Failure to meet the minimum disqualifies the candidate before any PET event begins.
Run + Shot Put + High Jump for 100 marks. Failing the run = no shot put / high jump. Pregnant married female candidates flagged in the medical step are not allowed to participate.
Final merit list is built from PET total marks only. Tie-breakers: DOB (older first), then higher educational qualification, then English alphabetical order on the Matric certificate.
Selected candidates undergo a medical examination plus character and antecedent verification before appointment. Concealment of facts leads to disqualification.
BPSSC sends the recommendation to the Commandant General, Home Guard & Fire Services, Bihar, Patna — the appointing authority for Havildar Instructor.

10 common questions answered
**No — any Indian citizen can apply.** But the catch is reservation: every relaxation in this notification — fee, age, women's 35% quota, BC/EBC/SC/ST/EWS reservation, ex-servicemen relaxation — applies **only** to Bihar domicile candidates. Non-Bihar candidates of any reserved category are treated as Unreserved (PDF §9(vi)).
**01 August 2025** — fixed in PDF §5.3, §10. Age is computed from the date of birth printed on your Class-10 (Matric) or equivalent certificate, not from the Aadhaar or any other document. A UR Male candidate must be born between **02-08-1988 and 01-08-2007**; a UR Female between **02-08-1985 and 01-08-2007**.
Bihar's recruitment rules give female candidates a **3-year extra ceiling** at the Unreserved level — UR Male max is **37**, UR Female max is **40** (PDF §5.4(1)). The same +3 logic applies at BC/EBC (40 for both M & F) and a +5 SC/ST relaxation lands at 42 for both genders.
**The PDF does not state any negative marking.** PDF §6(अ)(ii) only says '+1 mark for each correct answer' — there is no penalty clause. Treat unanswered Qs as zero. (BPSSC's Sipahi exams have historically been similar — but always reconfirm in the admit-card-instructions PDF.)
**No — the written exam is qualifying only.** Per PDF §6(अ)(vi): 'लिखित परीक्षा अंतिम मेधा सूची का आधार नहीं होगी'. You need ≥30% to be called for the PET (top 5× of category vacancies). The **final merit list is computed from PET marks (out of 100) only** — Run + Shot Put + High Jump.
**UR / BC Males:** 165 cm. **EBC / SC / ST Males:** 160 cm. **All female candidates:** 155 cm. **Third Gender:** same as BC standard (165 cm). No marks are awarded for height — but failing it disqualifies the candidate before any PET event runs (PDF §5.5(क), §6(ब)(iii)).
**No.** PDF §5.2 requires Intermediate (or equivalent) **passed** on or before **01-08-2025**. The written-exam shortlist itself is contingent on that date — appearing for, but not yet clearing, the 12th does not satisfy the eligibility.
**Yes — Rs. 100/- flat for every category and every gender** (PDF §15). There is no SC/ST / female / Trans / PwD concession in this notification, and no Bihar-domicile concession. Bank transaction charges, if any, are paid by the candidate.
**Yes, explicitly eligible** (PDF §5.1). Third Gender candidates compete under the **BC reservation** quota (per GAD Bihar letter 12722 dt. 12-09-2014). Their **physical standards and PET** are also at the **BC level** — 165 cm height for the Male standard, 5 cm chest expansion, etc. (PDF §5.5(घ), §6(ब)(v)).
**Not yet scheduled.** BPSSC will publish the date and admit card on bpssc.bihar.gov.in once applications close. Per PDF §23, the entire selection cycle (written → PET → medical → appointment) typically runs ~6 months — so a written exam in **Aug – Sep 2026** and final result by **end-2026** is a realistic working assumption.
